    Inelastic neutron scattering studies of the quantum frustrated magnet clinoatacamite, Îł\gamma-Cu2(OD)3Cl, a proposed valence bond solid (VBS)

    The frustrated magnet clinoatacamite, Îł\gamma-Cu2_2(OH)3_3Cl, is attracting a lot of interest after suggestions that at low temperature it forms an exotic quantum state termed a Valence Bond Solid (VBS) made from dimerised Cu2+^{2+} (S=1/2S=1/2) spins.\cite{Lee_clinoatacamite} Key to the arguments surrounding this proposal were suggestions that the kagom\'e planes in the magnetic pyrochlore lattice of clinoatacamite are only weakly coupled, causing the system to behave as a quasi-2-dimensional magnet. This was reasoned from the near 95∘^\circ angles made at the bridging oxygens that mediate exchange between the Cu ions that link the kagom\'e planes. Recent work pointed out that this exchange model is inappropriate for Îł\gamma-Cu2_2(OH)3_3Cl, where the oxygen is present as a ÎŒ3\mu_3-OH.\cite{Wills_JPC} Further, it used symmetry calculations and neutron powder diffraction to show that the low temperature magnetic structure (T<6T<6 K) was canted and involved significant spin ordering on all the Cu2+^{2+} spins, which is incompatible with the interpretation of simultaneous VBS and N\'eel ordering. Correspondingly, clinoatacamite is best considered a distorted pyrochlore magnet.     Spectral Properties From Lyman-alpha to H-alpha For An Essentially Complete Sample of Quasars I: Data

    We have obtained quasi-simultaneous ultraviolet-optical spectra for 22 out of 23 quasars in the complete PG-X-ray sample with redshift, z<0.4, and M_B<-23. The spectra cover rest-frame wavelengths from at least Lyman-alpha to H-alpha. Here we provide a detailed description of the data, including careful spectrophotometry and redshift determination. We also present direct measurements of the continua, strong emission lines and features, including Lyman-alpha, SiIV+OIV], CIV, CIII], SiIII], MgII, H-beta, [OIII], He5876+NaI5890,5896, H-alpha, and blended iron emission in the UV and optical. The widths, asymmetries and velocity shifts of profiles of strong emission lines show that CIV and Lyman-alpha are very different from H-beta and H-alpha. This suggests that the motion of the broad line region is related to the ionization structure, but the data appears not agree with the radially stratified ionization structure supported by reverberation mapping studies, and therefore suggest that outflows contribute additional velocity components to the broad emission line profiles.Comment: 42 pages, 10 figures, 13 tables.     The effect of pre-exposure on family resemblance categorization for stimuli of varying levels of perceptual difficulty

    This study investigated the effect that pre-exposure to a set of stimuli has on the prevalence of family resemblance categorization. 64 participants were tested to examine the effect that pre-exposure type (same-stimuli vs unrelated-stimuli) and the perceptual difficulty of the stimuli (perceptually similar vs perceptually different) has on categorization strategy. There was a significant effect of perceptual difficulty, indicating that perceptually different stimuli evoked a higher level of family resemblance sorting than perceptually similar stimuli. There was no significant main effect of pre-exposure type; however, there was a significant interaction between pre-exposure type and level of perceptual difficulty. Post-hoc tests revealed that this interaction was the result of an increase in family resemblance sorting for the perceptually different stimuli under relevant preexposure but no such effect for perceptually similar stimuli. The theoretical implications of these findings are discussed

    Slow Relaxation Process in Ising like Heisenberg Kagome Antiferromagnets due to Macroscopic Degeneracy in the Ordered State

    We study relaxation phenomena in the ferromagnetically ordered state of the Ising-like Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnets. We introduce the "weathervane loop" in order to characterize macroscopic degenerate ordered states and study the microscopic mechanism of the slow relaxation from a view point of the dynamics of the weathervane loop configuration.     A Parsec-Scale Study of the 5/15 GHz Spectral Indices of the Compact Radio Sources in M82

    Observations of the starburst galaxy, M82, have been made with the VLA in its A-configuration at 15 GHz and MERLIN at 5 GHz enabling a spectral analysis of the compact radio structure on a scale of < 0.1'' (1.6 pc). Crucial to these observations was the inclusion of the Pie Town VLBA antenna, which increased the resolution of the VLA observations by a factor of ~2. A number of the weaker sources are shown to have thermal spectra and are identified as HII regions with emission measures ~10^7 cm^-6 pc. Some of the sources appear to be optically thick at 5 GHz implying even higher emission measures of ~10^8 cm^-6 pc. The number of compact radio sources in M82 whose origin has been determined is now 46, of which 30 are supernova related and the remaining 16 are HII regions. An additional 15 sources are noted, but have yet to be identified, meaning that the total number of compact sources in M82 is at least 61. Also, it is shown that the distribution of HII regions is correlated with the large-scale ionised gas distribution, but is different from the distribution of supernova remnants. In addition, the brightest HII region at (B1950) 09h 51m 42.21s +69 54' 59.2'' shows a spectral index gradient across its resolved structure which we attribute to the source becoming optically thick towards its centre.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 15 pages, 9 figure

    Symmetry breaking due to Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions in the kagome lattice

    Due to the particular geometry of the kagom\'e lattice, it is shown that antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions are allowed and induce magnetic ordering. The symmetry of the obtained low temperature magnetic phases are studied through mean field approximation and classical Mont\'e Carlo simulations. A phase diagram relating the geometry of the interaction and the ordering temperature has been derived. The order of magnitude of the anisotropies due to Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions are more important than in non-frustrated magnets, which enhances its appearance in real systems. Application to the jarosites compounds is proposed. In particular, the low temperature behaviors of the Fe and Cr-based jarosites are correctly described by this model.Comment: 6 (revtex4) twocolumn pages, 6 .eps figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
